SUSTAINABILITY

PROTECTING THE FUTURE

Sustainability is increasingly vital within the sailmaking industry as we recognize the environmental impact of our activities on the oceans and beyond. By adopting sustainable practices, we can help protect the marine environment that is central to our industry and passion. This includes increasing our use of eco-friendly materials, reducing production waste and reducing our employee and customers carbon footprints.

As sailors, we have a unique connection to the sea, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that our craft contributes to preserving it for future generations. Prioritizing sustainability in sailmaking not only benefits the environment but also aligns with the growing expectations of customers.

Cleen TEC

CLEENTEC by DP

We have been increasing the use of Dimension Polyant’s CleenTEC sail cloth within our production processes. This product is manufactured with a recycled content of 28-39%, depending on the specific style, in relation to the total weight, is has been manufactured in climate-neutral production facilities and is a particularly easy product to recycle. This cloth allows us to cut carbon emissions from our production line and give our customers the chance to be a part of the fight against climate change.

Kemp Sails Bag

REDUCING WASTE

Throughout the manufacturing process our team aim to ensure that we produce the least waste possible. Starting with the design team they nest the design onto the cutting table beds in a methodical manner that reduces raw offcut waste.

The offcuts that we do end up producing either get recycled or where possible sent to local businesses or school groups to assist in small scale projects. The larger offcuts we use ourselves to be used for Kemp Sails Accessories

Producing items such as Kemp Sails bags that are built to last a decades of use within a range coastal environments. Coming in two sizes; medium and large these bags make great overnight bags, luggage bags for international travel or even for your sailing kit. Smaller offcuts become document wallets used for quotes and information at boatshows or as contrasting patches on other acrylic accessories.

AirSource Pump

AIRSOURCE HEAT PUMPS

We have two air source heat pumps on our manufacturing site in Wareham, Dorset that provides our loft with heating and hot water.

Our air source heat pumps efficiently extract heat from the outside air to warm our site in the winter months. They operate by transferring heat from the air into a refrigerant, which is then compressed to increase its temperature before being circulated through out heating system. This process provides a renewable, energy-efficient alternative to traditional heating methods, reducing our carbon emissions.

Reducing Packaging

REDUCING PACKAGING

At Kemp Sails, using paper-based packaging for our finished yacht sails offers significant environmental and practical benefits. Paper packaging is eco-friendly, made from renewable resources, and is fully biodegradable, reducing our impact on landfills and oceans. It’s also highly recyclable, allowing for repeated use and contributing to a circular economy.
